Local Liberal Democrat Councillors Lobby Their Leader on University Tuition Fees
Liberal Democrat councillors, Mione Goldspink, Bob Taylor and Calvin Horner and activist, Mike Shaw (who is the Lib-Dem candidate in the Sawbridgeworth By-Election) have all sent e-mail messages to Nick Clegg, asking him to honour the Pledge which he made during the General Election campaign. They have asked him to vote against the Government Bill on University Tuition Fees.
"We all think that it is wrong to break a definite promise, even if the economic situation is worse than expected", said Mione Goldspink.and Bob Taylor added "I quite agree, and Party policy still retains the aim of abolishing tuition fees altogether in the long term."
"Some of us were privileged to have had all our fees paid for by the State, and it seems grossly unfair that we should now be asking the younger generation to pay these enormous fees themselves, and to be saddled with debt for many, many, years." said Calvin Horner.
Mike Shaw feels very strongly that Liberal Democrat MP's who represent University cities may owe their election success to many student votes, and that these MP's should certainly vote against the Bill.
So, we are all calling on Nick Clegg to vote against the Bill, or at the very least, to abstain..
